Five Steps to Creating a Support Network

1. Make a list of the areas where you need support.

Do you need emotional support? Someone to talk to? Someone to understand your feelings? Or do you need task support? Get clear about the areas in your life where you need support.

2. Decide whom to ask for support.

Once you are clear on the kind of support you need, look for someone who can provide what you are seeking.

3. List the qualities.

List all the qualities you need in a support person, for example:
• a good listener
• sensitive
• empathetic
• generous
• kind
• or…

4. Allow yourself to be open and vulnerable.

Once you have listed the qualities you need in a support person, get ready to be open and vulnerable. Even with such a person available and willing to help you, you will not be able to tap into that help unless you are willing to be open. Others can support you only if you are open to sharing!

5. Examine your beliefs.

If you haven’t met someone who can support you, then I encourage you to search your past and list all your beliefs about receiving support. You may be holding back from letting yourself get help because you have no experience receiving support from others.

Remember, we are one spiritually—it is our egos that separate us. In our past, we may have had to do it all alone. But you don’t have to do it all alone anymore! Be open and allow yourself to get the help you deserve.
