A New Year and a New You!

The New Year is upon us, that time when we look ahead with renewed enthusiasm and aspiration. We have a sense of starting anew, of giving our life’s goals and dreams another try. But this year, before we set new goals, let’s first acknowledge ourselves. Let’s build our self-esteem by taking note of all the things we did right last year.

Here are a few steps to starting your new year on a positive note:

Take inventory of last year’s achievements

Begin by looking at yourself with new eyes, new aspirations, and new dreams—and welcome a fabulous new year by honouring yourself first. Start with the very best of all the things you did right last year, and get ready to embrace a new beginning.

When we set New Year’s goals, we often start with what we would like to create in the coming year. But before you look at the year to come, take inventory of all you did last year. Yes, celebrate yourself—and build on that energy! To give new energy to our goals, we need to build on the energy we have. How do we do that? By noticing the many things we have done right, by noticing our strengths, our accomplishments, and the challenges we have overcome.

Pick up a journal and jot down your accomplishments in all areas of your life. Look at what an accomplishment really is, not what it might look like to the outside world. You can do this in several ways: by writing down your accomplishments in linear fashion, or by using a mind map, as I did. Here is a brief sketch of the accomplishments I came up with in my mind map in just one sitting. (As I forge ahead, I can think of many more things to add.) Start with whatever comes to mind and build on it. Your list doesn’t have to be complete. It doesn’t have to be perfect either. Just let the juices flow. Don’t wait. Do it now, so that you can begin to feel excited about the new.

Here is my mind map.

As an example, if you are a business owner, acknowledge the calls you made. Pat yourself on the back for the events you attended. If your business didn’t give you the results you wanted, celebrate yourself for not giving up.

Take time to be nice to yourself. When you are nice to yourself, you don’t get hooked into your ego, that part of you that judges and makes you feel small. When you are nice to yourself, you tap into the universal energy of forgiveness, love, and kindness, despite what might have happened last year. You accept yourself. When we are big enough to love ourselves and not get caught up in rejection, we can take action. We build our courage muscle by facing our inner critic, taming it, and quieting it with the energy of acknowledgement and celebration. When we celebrate ourselves, the Universe puts opportunities in front of us that help us build a bigger life.

Create a New Canvas

Yes, the New Year is waiting for you to create whatever you desire. Start out by writing down the goals that inspire you. You can think of them logically, or you can ask your subconscious to help you achieve your goals by connecting them with your creative brain. I do this by making a dream board, which is very easy to do.

Make a collage of magazine pictures you like. Don’t analyze the process; just pick the pictures randomly as they speak to you. I have done collages for many years, and I am always amazed at how far ahead my subconscious mind is. It knows my dreams!

Last year, when I made a collage, every picture I chose was about a house. We didn’t have any plan to buy a new house, but sure enough, six months later, we moved into our new house. The process of selling our old one and buying a new one couldn’t have been more effortless. Trust your subconscious. Cut and paste the pictures that speak to you.

Here is my new dream board for this year.

Once you have gotten in touch with your dreams, all you have to do is to come up with a plan to achieve them. Ask for support if you need it. Call a friend, a coach, or anyone who can help you make your dreams a reality—because you deserve to live a life filled with fun and passion.
